Acupuncture for Chronic Pain Related Insomnia

Last summer a systematic review and meta-analysis was published suggesting that acupuncture is a safe and effective modality that can be utilized for those who suffer from chronic pain related insomnia. Patients who suffer from chronic pain know firsthand how much it can have an impact on their quality of life. Pain can reduce the continuity of sleep and insufficient sleep can reduce a patient’s tolerance of pain. It is a vicious cycle that can create extra suffering. While there are many pharmacological options to help with insomnia they come with their fair share of side effects such as addiction, allergic reactions, dizziness and gastrointestinal upset.

Acupuncture is a reliable treatment for those who have insomnia related to chronic pain. Regulation of the neuroendocrine system can occur after stimulation of specific acupuncture points. Studies show that there is a release of endogenous opioid peptides during acupuncture and this in turn creates an analgesic effect as well as an increase in the expression of melatonin to improve sleep.

Take a look at the study below to read more about the data findings.
